Methods of joining of conveyor belts

Those how operate belt conveyors know that there are two main type of splicing conveyor belts: a vulcanized compound using heat or chemicals (glue) or mechanical fastening through hinges or plates.
Understanding all the pros and cons of each of the connection methods is an important factor in deciding whether to use one or another method of belt connection.
Mechanical fastening systems can be used with conveyor belts witn a high level of tension. Also modern mechanical systems exclude sifting of transported materials.
Modern mechanical systems for connection of conveyor belts don’t make noise, if they are correctly installed and maintained can be used together with devices for cleaning the conveyor belt.
Not all types of conveyor belts are suitable for vulcanization. Old and worn fabric tapes become brittle when heated during vulcanization.

Old rubber conveyor belts are also not suitable for vulcanization: over time the properties of rubber (the ability of bind) deteriorate.

In some cases the lenght of the belt may not be sufficient for the vulcanization operation. The vulcanization requires clean, dry, relatively warm conditions for its success. Many factors: chemical inclusions in the tape, excessive humidity, extremely low temperatures can interfere with adhesion. The result is a loose connection.
Also vulcanization may not be possible in hard to reach places.
To carry out the vulcanization operation, shutting down the conveyor for a considerable time is required, much longer than it would be when installing the mechanical connection. Substances used in the vulcanization process require at least eight hours of downtime for the line necessary for their hardening.
Inspection of the vulcanized compound is difficult: it is not possible to visually detect early signs of adhesion failure.
Vulcanization requires a qualified person.
Even if everything is done properly, vulcanization weakens the conveyor belt, removing the layer from it. With poorly cured, the effects on tape strength are even worse.

The mechanical connector, when properly installed, does not violate the integrity of the belt.

Knowing all the factors that should be considered when choosing between mechanical fastening and vulcanized joint, you have the opportunity to make a more effective decision on the type of connector for the conveyor belt.

Regardless of the condition of the belt mechanical connection systems are a perfect choise for both new and old worn belts.
Mechanicals systems are specially designed as the most wear-resistant way for connection conveyor belts. At a maximum height of 16 mm they can provide the strength of the connection of rubberized fabric belts up to 3500 kN/m.
The finished connection is smooth and has narrow profile because there is a oportunity to use tools for clearning the belt.

Vulcanization is a complex prosedure that can ensure smooth adhesion with minimal risk of engagement, tearing and other harmful wear on the belt.
There are two type of vulcanazation processes: hot and cold. Each process requires unique tools and in-depth knowledge of the rubber vulcanization process.
For hot or cold vulcanization the belt must be desassembled and each end of the belt must be prepared accordance with the recommendations for splicing this particular belt.
Proper belt preparetion is critical to ensure that the finished connector meets the requires specifications.
During hot vulcanization the splicing place is heated under pressure using a vulcanizing press. This process takes several hours. If you tighten the belt and use it before the joint is completely cooled, the connective will be ineffective and may completely fall apart, resulting in additional downtime.
A cold vulcanization does not need a press, althouth uses binders for chemical reaction to splic together the two ends of the tape.
